Cross Motor Exercise
Work out a blocking routine for yourself that involves executing the same block with each arm at the same time. For instance you may decide a sequence of high block, low block, middle block, inside block, high block. You may prefer to return to low block after every other block, i.e. Low block, high block, middle block, high block, inside block, low block, high X block. We sometimes do this to music, anything that has four beats to the bar allows you to work on a four (or eight, or twelve) block sequence.
We also practice this against two foamstriking tools (see video). As with lazy 8's use your imagination to develop this exercise to suit your own style and practice routines. Just ensure that both arms are doing the same thing. Punches and strikes may also be used.
What double blocking does
This exercise involves blocking with both hands (and using both sides of the brain) simultaneously, and is an incredibly beneficial exercise. This activity helps students to understand where they are in space in relation to their partner. The blocking action moves the arms and eyes relative to the midline of the body (as does waving hands like clouds). It helps to get the eyes working as a team and assists in developing hand-eye co-ordination. This will enhance fine motor skills such as drawing and writing and gross motor skills such as throwing and gymnastic movements. |
